People on the Northern Marianas island of Rota are being warned to prepare for an approaching tropical storm.

The CNMI's acting governor, Victor Hocog, has issued an alert for residents on the island to secure loose objects that could be picked up by strong winds.

The storm, still several hundred kilometres to the south of Guam, which is 91 kilometres from Rota, has maximum sustained winds of 56 kilometres an hour.
