Tommy Haas among the upsets in heineken Open

18:11 pm on 8 January 2014

The upsets are coming thick and fast at Auckland's Heineken tennis Open, with second seed Tommy Haas joining Cypriot star Marcos Baghdatis in an early exit.

Baghdatis fell in three sets to a qualifier, the American Steve Johnson, while the rising US player Jack Sock, knocked out Haas.6-4 6-4.

Haas says there are pros and cons to the format of the Auckland tournament, where the top four seeds get a bye into the second round.

He says on this occasion the first-round break didn't work in his favour, and Sock did play the better match, having already played on Tuesday.

But Haas says he could have easily entered another tournament last week if he thought the lack of court time would be an issue, but chose to spend that time with his family instead.

The third seeded American, John Isner, avoided the carnage to reach the quarter-finals, but he needed three sets to get past Slovakian qualifier Lukas Lacko.

Also into the quarter-finals are German fifth seed, Philipp Kohlschreiber, and the Spanish player Roberto Bautista Agut.

The top seed and defending champion, David Ferrer, begins his campaign for a record fifth title in tonight's feature match, against another American qualifier, Donald Young.
