Re-elected Nauru parliament again fails to elect speaker

12:58 pm on 5 May 2010

Nauru's parliament is still not functioning after a third sitting since the elections has failed to elect a Speaker, Deputy Speaker and President.

The elections on April 24th returned the same 18 MPs who had sat in the previous parliament.

Since then, parliament has not been able to agree on a Speaker and has therefore been unable to sit.

When the Clerk of Parliament called for nominations for Speaker yesterday, there was no response from the floor and he was forced to adjourn the sitting until Thursday.

Earlier this week, the caretaker President Marcus Stephen said his administration can continue to govern through to the end of next month, if necessary.
