Glass deck for Dunedin's historic railway station

An independent commissioner has given the go-ahead for a restaurant deck to be attached to Dunedin's railway station.

The city council agreed to lease the north end of the building to Cobb & Co, but there was public disagreement over the idea of a deck with outdoor seating.

Sixty-one submissions both for and against were sent to the council, with many people saying a deck would ruin the heritage front of the building, which is more than 100 years old.

The commissioner, Gary Rae, noted in his decision that the restaurant and glass-panelled deck would bring vitality to a part of the building that had lain vacant for some years.
