A French Polynesian anti-nuclear group says it endorses a decision by both the biggest church and the political opposition to pursue France for alleged crimes against humanity.

The decision was reached at a meeting in Tahiti of Association 193 which has marked the third anniversary of its foundation.

The group, whose name refers to the 193 nuclear weapons tests France carried out in the South Pacific, has been assisting test victims trying to get compensation for radiation-induced illnesses.

It has also collected more than 50,000 signatures in a bid to get the territorial government to hold a referendum on the test legacy.

The Maohi Protestant church wants to take France to the International Criminal Court while the Tavini Huiraatira Party intends to take its case to UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva.

The French compensation process has stalled because resignations have left the compensation commission short of the minimum number of members to function.
