Floodwaters washed out the only bridge into the alpine village on Tuesday morning, trapping residents and holiday makers.

Speed restrictions are in place on the Lake Ōhau Road bridge.

The Waitaki District Council said temporary traffic management would remain until permanent repairs including guard railing and sealing were completed at a later date.

"Safety of our contractors and road users remains a priority, please adhere to any temporary directions and signage," the council said.

"Other roads in the area including Broken Hut Road, Ben Omar Road, Falston Road, Birchwood Road, Quailburn Road, and Awakino Skifield Road, should all be open to some vehicle access from this afternoon, subject to work going as planned.

"We would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the contractors who have worked incredibly hard under tough conditions to get this access restored in time for the end of the school holidays."

The council has urged people not to remove or adjust any signs or cones.

Road Safety coordinator Jason Evered said winter conditions could mean icy roads that have also been affected by flooding.

"Following the re-opening of road access to flood impacted parts of the district, I encourage all road users to drive to the conditions, give yourself some extra time and carry extra food, water and blankets as we have seen the conditions change quite quickly."

Boil water notices remain in place for Otematata and Ōmarama.
