Amid deadlock, Nauru opposition considers suggesting speaker candidate

14:09 pm on 7 May 2010

The Nauru opposition says it may put forward a candidate for Speaker to overcome an impasse that has stopped parliament from sitting since a poll two weeks ago.

That election returned the same 18 MPs who had sat in the previous parliament.

On four occasions since the election the parliamentarians have met but no candidate has been nominated for Speaker so the assembly has not been able to proceed.

Now the Opposition says it is considering putting forward a candidate with the intention of dissolving parliament and allowing for fresh elections.

Parliament is next due to sit on Tuesday.
