Pop star Lorde has donated $20,000 to a group trying to feed hungry school pupils in the Hutt Valley that was struggling for funding.
RNZ reported last week the organiser of the Fuel the Need scheme was struggling to get support from local businesses and had been seeking help through a Givealittle page.
The page received the $20,000 donation from the songwriter yesterday.
A message on the campaign page reads "love from a former kid who is passionate about all kids having access to food at school".
Fuel the Need organiser Manuel Dalton said he saw the big donation yesterday - but did not recognize the name Ella Yelich-O'Connor.
He told RNZ once he googled the name and came up with Lorde, he became a fan.
"Yeah, I definitely am now. I definitely appreciate New Zealand music, but it's not on my top 10 playlist."
The Givealittle page had a $20,000 goal, which has now been easily reached with the singer's donation.
The Fuel the Need programme needs $30,000 a year funding to feed about 50 children a day who were turning up to school without lunch.
