Pakistan denounces US intelligence leaks

08:26 am on 27 July 2010

Pakistan has denounced leaked United States intelligence reports that accuse its premier spy agency of supporting Taliban insurgents as inconsistent with realities on the ground.

Tens of thousands of documents dating from 2004 to 2009 have been released by the whistleblowers' website Wikileaks to The New York Times, Britain's The Guardian and Germany's Der Spiegel, AFP reports.

They carry allegations that Iran is providing money and arms to the Taliban and detail how widespread corruption is hampering the war effort.

The leaks reportedly link Pakistan's secret service to an assassination plot on Afghan President Hamid Karzai, attacks on NATO warplanes, and a plot to poison the beer supply of Western troops.

A Pakistan foreign ministry spokesperson says the reports are far-fetched and skewed.

The Pentagon says it may take weeks for a review to ascertain how much damage has been done.
