The search for a swimmer missing at Karioitahi Beach on Auckland's west coast has been paused.

The middle-aged man was reported missing at 8.15pm last night and a search was launched until it became too dark to continue.
Lifeguards, the police Eagle helicopter and a Coastguard air patrol carried out a shoreline sweep this morning but found no sign of him.
It is not yet known whether the search will resume tomorrow.
There have been at least 30 water-related deaths since the beginning of December.
