The global recession could cost New Zealand almost $1 billion in tourism export earnings next year, according to Tourism New Zealand.

Chief executive George Hickton predicts a drop of 7% in tourism numbers over summer and 15% for all of 2009 - mainly as a result of fewer Asian visitors.

Tourism New Zealand is starting promotional campaigns in Australia,Britain and the United States to counter the loss of Asian visitors.
