American Samoa's Hunkin keen to delay next minimum wage increase

10:43 am on 14 April 2011

American Samoa congressman, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, says he may ask the U.S. Congress to again delay the implementation of the next minimum wage increase for American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas.

Last year a federal law delayed the 50-cent minimum wage hike in 2010 and 2011 for American Samoa, while the U.S. Government Accountability Office conducts a new minimum wage impact study on American Samoa and the Northern Marianas.

Faleomavaega says the office's new report will be issued this June and he may ask Congress to delay the increases in 2012.

However he says under no circumstances will Congress roll-back minimum wage rates.

He says workers in American Samoa have received an increase of 1-US dollar and-50 cents per hour, since the mandated wage hikes went into effect in 2007.

There has been talk in American Samoa about the possibility of rolling back the wage increases which StarKist cannery says will be helpful to them.
