Three teams remain in the hunt for the Oceania Under 17 Preliminary football title after the second round of matches in Apia.

American Samoa turned the tournament on its head with a surprise 3-0 win over tournament favourites, the Cook Islands.

American Samoa's technical adviser Ruben Luvu says their focus on defence paid off and he was pleased with how the territory stood up physically.

Meanwhile Samoa also grabbed their first win in front of their home fans, edging traditional rivals Tonga 3-2.

The results mean the team to advance to the full Under 17 Championship won't be decided until the final whistle is blown on Saturday, with American Samoa able to guarantee their place with a win over Tonga.
