Emergency services were called to State Highway 2, between Waipawa and Ōtāne, about 2.30pm.

Both patients were taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital, one by helicopter and the other by ambulance.

The road was closed for a time but has since reopened.

A hospital spokesperson said a man in his 60s and a man in his 20s were being assessed in the emergency department.

Further south, State Highway 1 at Ōhau in the south of Horowhenua has re-opened, after a serious crash closed both lanes earlier on.

A man was killed in the two-car crash at the intersection of the highway and Kuku Beach Road, Manakau.
