Bill promotes voluntary student group membership

18:44 pm on 21 August 2009

ACT MP Sir Roger Douglas has had a bill drawn from the members' ballot which would end the compulsory membership of student associations.

Sir Roger says student associations are one of only a few organisations in New Zealand that can compel memberships and students have paid the price.

He says most student associations are dominated by a small minority who push their own agenda rather than those of the majority.

Sir Roger says the bill would make membership of the associations voluntary.
