Govt wants private sector to build and maintain school

20:05 pm on 15 April 2010

The Government has confirmed it wants to have the private sector build and maintain a new primary school, as well as a prison.

On Wednesday, the Government announced plans to have a 1000-bed prison built and run by a private company in South Auckland.

In the case of schools, Infrastructure Minister Bill English says a private company would build and effectively own the building for 30 years before handing it over to the Crown.

He told Morning Report it could be a worthwhile experiment to have a school operated in this way by 2013.

Mr English said a public-private partnership would let Government be less concerned about how a school is built and more about what kind of building and education it wants.
