6.3 earthquake hits off southern Japan

An 6.3 magnitude earthquake has hit off the coast of southern Japan.

The US Geological Survey recorded the quake at 8.48am local time (11.48am in NZ), with an epicentre about 37km southeast off the coast of Miyazaki prefecture at a depth of 24km.

No tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
