The 25-year-old driver crashed the car during the pursuit, injuring himself and seriously injuring a female passenger.

He and the passenger, a 23-year-old woman, were taken to Middlemore Hospital.

A police spokesperson said shortly after 3am officers attempted to pull over a stolen vehicle on Springs Road in East Tamaki.

The driver failed to stop, and the officers soon lost sight of the vehicle.

The spokesperson said a short time later, police discovered the vehicle crashed into a wall on Kerwyn Ave, about one kilometre from Springs Road.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

The man is due to appear in the Manukau District Court tomorrow.
