Idiotic to rush into elections - says Bainimarama

Fiji's military commander and interim prime minister says it would be idiotic to rush into general elections without achieving what they have set out to do.

Commodore Frank Bainimarama made the comment on Fiji TV last night in response to a statement in India attributed to the interim finance minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, that elections would be held in 2010.

Commodore Bainimarama says Mr Chaudhry would have made the comment based on the roadmap they have drawn up.

Commodore Bainimarama says the military did not do what it did in December just so Fiji can have another election.

He says that doesn't make sense and would be one of the most idiotic actions they have ever taken.

Commodore Bainimarama says they would be the laughing stock of the whole world if they hand the country straight back without making any changes to the structures Fiji has.

He says they have spoken with the EU but Fiji should sort out its problems first and then hold general elections, adding that without that there would be no election.
