On Sunday, officers rescued a fibreglass dinghy near Lata in Temotu Province.

The small boat, carrying eight people, had gone missing the previous night.

Police say people should not be travelling in small boats, powered by outboard motors, at night.

Superintendent James Toaki said boat owners needed to ensure they had all the necessary equipment before embarking on any trip.

That included extra paddles, life jackets, enough fuel and a fully operational engine, food and water, and some means of communication.
