Style File is a series that looks at young New Zealand fashion designers through different phases of their careers.
Lucilla Gray, 22, says that it’s a little bit frowned upon to start your own label straight out of university, but going her own way since graduating has been paying off.
After recently debuting her collection at London Fashion Week, Lucilla was also selected as one of 22 industry-picked up-and-comers to showcase at this year’s Fashion Week in Paris as well.
It’s an experience that makes her feel confident about the success she’s managed to achieve in such a short time, and she puts it down to hard work and an uncompromising drive to succeed.
Lucilla’s prints are a defining element of her collection, and she says that the fundamental characteristics of her label are sophistication, vibrancy, intelligence and fun.
She’s been touted as one to watch, but what would she do if it doesn’t work out?
“I don’t think that’s ever been an option,” she laughs. “It has to work.”
