Cooks and Niue fighters to box off for Games medal

Either the Cook Islands or Niue will win a medal in boxing at the Commonwealth Games.

Heavyweights Duken Tutakitoa-Williams of Niue and Michael Schuster of the Cook Islands face each other overnight on Thursday after both received byes.

The winner is guaranteed at least a bronze medal.

The Cooks has only ever won one medal, a bronze, in lawn bowls in the history of the Games, while Niue has never won a medal since making its debut in 2002.

The bout's winner could face Sam Plodzicki-Faoagli for a place in the final after the Samoan defeated India's Sanjeet Sanjeet 3-2 in his last 16 fight.

He now faces Andy Andall of Grenada in the quarter-finals.

Also in the heavywight division, Papua New Guinea's Arthur Lavalou, another recipient of a bye, faces one of the section's favourites, Lewis Williams of England.

Another four Pacific Island boxers are one bout away from winning at least a bronze medal in Birmingham.

Papua New Guinea welterweight Neville Warupi defeated Pemberton Lele of Solomon Islands 4-1, and now faces Scotland's Tyler Jolly.

Bantamweight Jamie Chang automatically earned his quarter-final spot after receiving a bye and now faces a Welsh fighter.

Samoan light middleweight Marion Ah Tong won his prelimenary bout with a unanimous decision over Sri Lanka's Niklas Vittalis, and is now set to face Tanzania's Kassim Mbundwike.

Niue's Xavier Mata'afa-Ikinofo qualified in the welterweight division after gaining a unanimous decision over Ghana's Jean Ngah.

All boxers need one win to be guranteed a bronze.
