A vegetation fire on Auckland's Mt Wellington has been contained.

At its peak, six fire trucks and a helicopter were fighting the blaze, which engulfed 60 square metres of grass.

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) said the fire was contained at 1.50pm.

Some crews were still at the scene dampening down hot spots.

FENZ arrived at the scene at 12.40pm.

Images were posted on social media on Friday afternoon.

FENZ urged people to stay away from the mountain.

A spokesperson for St John earlier said they were aware of the fire but had not been called out.

FENZ said it was not aware of any injuries.
