Vanuatu Tourism Office calls for wharf upgrade

07:38 am on 6 July 2012

The Vanuatu Tourism Office says the country's wharves must be upgraded to cater to growth in visitor numbers from cruise ships.

Its comment follows a call by the tour ship operator Carnival Australia for the government to improve wharf facilities and update its underwater maps so large vessels can berth.

The Marketing Manager at the Vanuatu Tourism Office, Allan Kalfabun says infrastructure upgrades are needed to ensure the country can cater to growing visitor numbers.

"In the last three or four years the cruise ship market has skyrocketed. There is potential for more ports and we've been confirmed by Carnival Australia that Vanuatu, meaning Port Vila, Santo, Tanna and a few other little islands are a very popular destination for Carnival Australia."

Allan Kalfabun says the Tourism Office is working closely with the tourism ministry to facilitate new port projects in the outer islands.
