First draft of new Bougainville constitution completed

11:23 am on 7 February 2003

The first draft of a constitution for an autonomous Bougainville government in Papua New Guinea has been completed.

The Constitutional draftsman, Sir James Fraser, has handed the draft to the Bougainville People's Congress president, Joseph Kabui.

The Australian government funded the work of Sir James and has contributed nearly 93-thousand US dollars to the consitutional drafting process.

Members of the Bougainville Constitutional Commission will tour the island in the coming weeks to present the draft to communities to seek their views.

When receiving the draft, Mr Kabui called on ex-combatants to make every effort to move the weapons disposal to stage two in areas where this has not yet happened.
