New Caledonians take to street in general strike

14:34 pm on 28 September 2006

About 500 people in New Caledonia have marched through the streets of Noumea to demand lower prices.

The march is part of a general strike launched by the CSTNC union on Monday which this week affected fuel supplies and bakeries.

The action has also forced the Goro Nickel company to reduce its operations amid a call by the CSTNC leader, Sylvain Nea, for all Filipinos employed on the site to be sent home.

He has also called for the nationalisation of the sector even it may require independence.

The president of the territorial government, Marie Noelle Themereau, says the Filipinos will stay as their departure would imperil not only the Goro project but also the project planned for the Kanak north.
