A man died on Tongariro Alpine Crossing this morning, leading to a rāhui on the popular track.
The man suffered a medical problem at Red Crater on the crossing.
Another walker activated a personal locator beacon at about 8.40am and emergency services were called.
The man's body has been recovered and a karakia (prayer) has been held at the Mangatepopo Rd end of the crossing.
The rāhui (temporary closure) will be lifted on Tuesday.
