A New Zealand art gallery is holding its first solo exhibition of Tuvaluan art.

Lakiloko Keakea's medium is Fafetu, a star-shaped motif traditionally woven and adorned with coloured pandanus and coconut fibres.

However, the partially sighted artist from the island of Niutao, uses contemporary materials from New Zealand to striking visual effect.
The traditions of Tuvalu remain important to her practice said her granddaughter who acts as translator for the Gana Tuvalu speaking artist.
"Although she was inspired by the arts back at home, she's adjusted to New Zealand culture and kind of incorporated that into her art," Patricia Filipi said.
Lakiloko Keakea's exhibition of different Fafetu formats is on show at Welington's Dowse gallery until the end of October.
