Questions about health of Chavez

12:30 pm on 3 January 2013

The main Opposition party in Venezuela has called on the government to tell the truth about the health of President Hugo Chavez.

It's now more than three weeks since Mr Chavez underwent further surgery for cancer in a hospital in Cuba on 11 December.

Little information regarding his health has been made public with no word at all from Mr Chavez himself, prompting rumours on social media of his imminent demise.

Mr Chavez, 58, was elected for a fourth term in office in October. He has been in power since 1999.

The BBC reports he is due to be sworn in for a new term on 10 January, but it is unclear if he will be able to attend ceremony.

Vice-President Nicolas Maduro said he had visited Mr Chavez in hospital twice since arriving in Havana on Saturday.
