A Wellington campground is banning non-paying guests to stop them taking advantage of their facilities.

Marilyn Heazlewood runs the Paekakariki Holiday Park on the Kapiti Coast.

In the past, she had brought in a visitor's fee, which was common for busy campgrounds, but people refused to pay.

Over the past three years, on some days about 50 non-paying visitors turned up and used their facilities.

They could not take it any more, she said.

The campground was not big and modern like some others. They could not afford for more people to show up once they reached capacity, Ms Heazlewood said.
