A Manus Island refugee in Papua New Guinea's capital for medical treatment says phone cards are no longer being given to about 100 refugees staying in a Port Moresby hotel.
Last month, the same group of men were stripped of their weekly allowance, forcing them to sell food rations to afford for other necessities such as toiletries.
The refugee said previously the men at Granville Hotel were each given two phone cards on a weekly basis, worth about $US6 each.
He said the phone cards stopped being provided when the company Paladin Solutions took over the contract to provide security at the hotel from the start of February.
Since then, the refugee said men in Granville have struggled to stay in contact with their families.
He said refugees in two other hotels in Port Moresby continued to receive phone cards and a weekly $US30 allowance, as do men on Manus Island.
Australia has detained refugees indefinitely on Manus since 2013.
