Fiji is defending its decision to forcibly deport an asylum seeker from Iran, amid accusations that it has bungled an important human rights opportunity.

Loghman Sawari left Port Moresby on a false passport almost two weeks ago, but was taken by Fiji police on Friday as he travelled with his lawyer to meet immigration officals to apply for asylum.

The 21-year-old from Iran was detained on Manus Island by Australia at the age of 17.
