A man is "understandably shaken" after allegedly having a firearm shot in his direction.

Police said they were seeking information about the alleged incident that took place on Friday night between Kaitangata and Milton in Otago.

Around 11.15pm, a man driving a Ford Falcon on Lakeside Road noticed what appeared to be a utility vehicle travelling close behind him with its lights on high beam.

The driver of the Ford Falcon pulled over and got out of his car. The other driver then allegedly pointed a firearm and shot in the direction of the man and his car.

Police said the man was not injured but his car did have some damage.

"The man is understandably shaken, and police are now investigating the circumstances of the incident."

Police said those investigating wanted to hear from anyone in the area between 10.30pm and 11.30pm on Friday night - who may have seen the utility vehicle or have dashcam footage.

"We would also like to speak with anyone who witnessed this incident or any of the circumstances surrounding it."

Anyone with information was asked to call 105 and quote file number 230107/5299.

People could also call Crime Stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
