Plans to bring Te Papa to Manukau are moving to the next phase with a new community-based development group charged with working on the concept.
The proposed National Centre for Collections, Education and Exhibitions is a joint venture between Te Papa and Auckland cultural agencies.
The development group of community leaders, museum and art experts and iwi and cultural representatives has until the end of the year to present a business case to the main project partners.
The chair of Te Papa, Evan Williams, says building should start next year once the Government approves funding.
