NRL still tight

The National Rugby League play-off picture has become a little bit clearer after the weekend's matches.

The Warriors 22-10 win over Newcastle yesterday moved the Auckland side up to 6th in the standings, while it has virtually killed off the Knights chances of making the top eight.

Wests Tigers have virtually guaranteed their first appearance in the NRL finals since their premiership of 2005 following a 43-18 thrashing of Penrith.

Souths slipped to 9th after an 18-16 loss to Melbourne.

Tonight top of the table St George-Illawarra play 7th placed Manly.

The Dragons have 32 points, Gold Coast and Wests 30, Penrith Roosters and Warriors 28, Manly and Brisbane 26, and Souths, Parramatta and Canberra 24.
