A long-standing member of the Onuku Marae runanga on Banks Peninsula would like to see the historic Takapuneke Reserve near Akaroa revert to its natural state.
Christchurch City Council agreed at a meeting in December last year to accept a council-commissioned conservation report on the cultural heritage values of the reserve, which is of historical importance for Maori and Pakeha.
The counci also agreed to assist with preparing a management plan and push for Takapuneke to become a national reserve, which would require the help of Government.
George Tikao, who chaired the runanga for many years, says it is a wonderful part of the peninsula which all people should be able to share.
He says if the bush grew back in Takapuneke it would encourage an increase in the population of native birds.
Mr Tikao says walkways could also be created for visitors to enjoy.
