The US government has approved an American Samoa application for $US100,000 worth of grant funding for the territory's broadband strategy or TBS.
The grant represents one of two telecommunications projects the governor, Lolo Matalasi Moliga, has pushed to diversify the local economy.

Improved broadband infrastructure was launched last year through the Hawaiki fiber cable.
The territorial government report said the TBS initiative would guide efforts to maximise broadband resources, improve infrastructure, plan for future expansion and other policy needs.
The American Samoa Commerce Department received the grant and is now in the process of advertising a request for proposal.
The second telecommunications project is the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) business incubator, which will be opened in October this year.
The incubator would house a 25-seat BPO operation providing up to 40 new jobs in the next year.
