A combination of large swells and a king tide has prompted a warning to swimmers to stay out of the water along the Bay of Plenty and Eastern Coromandel coast.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand says beach-goers should take extra care and stay away from the water.
Eastern Region manager Leigh Sefton said no area was considered safe for swimming at present but this would be reassessed throughout the day.
Walking tracks around the base of Mauao / Mount Maunganui and to Moturiki Island have reopened after being were closed for the morning because of heavy swells.
Tauranga City Council says there was minor damage to the base track surface which is loose in some areas.
It says walkers should stick to the tracks especially along Moturiki and security guards will be on hand to remind people to take care.
