The toddler was Arapera Fia, aged 2.

Police said the child was taken to Starship hospital, and the death was being investigated as suspicious.

"The post-mortem examination confirmed the toddler had multiple serious injuries which are believed to be non-accidental," Detective Inspector Warrick Adkin said.

"Enquiries at the Weymouth address are continuing and the occupants are currently co-operating."

They said the investigation was in its early stages.
