The plan, developed by the Waikato Regional Transport Committee, includes funding for walking and cycling tracks, increased road maintenance, road safety improvements and the new Hamilton to Auckland commuter train.

It also includes the completion of the Waikato Expressway and advocating for its extension from Cambridge to Piarere.

Other state highway projects include State Highway 1 at Bulli Point on the eastern shore of Lake Taupō and the Awakino Gorge on State Highway 3.

Public submissions on the plan open on Friday 19 February.
