An Indonesian warship has opened fire on a Chinese fishing fleet off Papua, killing one crew member and wounding two.
The news agency AAP reports that the incident occurred when an Indonesian warship intercepted four Chinese-flagged vessels suspected of using illegal nets in Indonesian-controlled waters.
The Indonesian navy says first three warning shots were fired after the Chinese ships refused to answer radio and visual signals from the patrol frigate.
It says when the ship failed to stop, several more shots were fired, killing one Chinese crew member.
Three of the Chinese ships escaped while the fourth has been taken into Indonesian custody and towed to Merauke in Papua.
The shooting may trigger a diplomatic row between Beijing and Jakarta.
