Council won't review MRP's consents for lake

Waikato Regional Council will not review Mighty River Power's consent conditions for Lake Taupo, despite suggestions that the power company is eroding the lake's foreshore.

Every five years the council can choose to review the power firm's consents, which allow it to manage water levels in the lake.

Friends of Lake Taupo Incorporation, which has been pushing for a review, says those lake levels are too high and that's causing foreshore erosion.

The regional council has decided against a review, saying it commissioned advice that found that lake level management wasn't the main contributor to erosion.

Council spokesperson Brent Sinclair says erosion will be managed through a council strategy with help from local iwi, Ngati Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board.
