A child psychiatrist says some programmes aimed at rehabilitating young Maori criminals, are not working.
Dr Hinemoa Elder made the remarks at a recent conference for children and young people.
She works with high risk young offenders as part of the Regional Youth Forensics Services team, based in Auckland.
Dr Elder says there has been a lot of improvement in helping young Maori criminals in the past decade, but problems still exist.
She says it is important not to create new programmes, but rather fix the ones already in place.
