New 'henge' found at Stonehenge

13:27 pm on 23 July 2010

Archaeologists have discovered a wooden version of Stonehenge, at the same site in Britain.

Using technology equivalent to an X-ray, archaeologists have found what appears to be a circle of large timber obelisks, similar in size to the central part of Stonehenge.

The new henge is about 25 metres in diameter and is though to have been some sort of neolithic temple.

It is thought to date back to the Neolithic period 2,000 to 4,000 years ago.

It mirrors a similar monument found 1300 metres south east of Stonehenge, and all three monuments would have been roughly aligned.

Researchers will now work to produce a detailed map of the site.
