French Polynesia assembly meeting called off amid opposition moves

14:28 pm on 14 November 2006

All but two of French Polynesia's assembly members have boycotted today's budget debate as opposition politicians have reportedly been in talks to consider a motion to oust the government formed last year.

The 2007 budget has reportedly been finalised in a special government meeting this morning and is expected to be sent to the assembly before the end of the day.

This comes as opposition politicians have met in the office of the assembly president, Philip Schyle.

Radio reports say the opposition politicians at the talks were joined by outer island MPs who may hold the balance of power.

The MPs had joined the government in April amid a failed opposition plot to oust the government.
