New Zealand cyclists win first medal at world junior champs

The Auckland pair of Stephanie McKenzie and Henrietta Mitchell have won New Zealand's first medal on the track at the world junior champs in Italy.

McKenzie and Mitchell won the silver medal in the women's team sprint, breaking the world record in their qualifying run.

They clocked 35.963 seconds to break the world mark before the Russian combination bettered that time by 8/10ths of a second.

The Russian pair went faster again in the medal ride-off, lowering the world record to 35.029 seconds.
