Parliament has tabled a petition calling for a ban on single-use plastic bags which garnered 16,000 signatures.
The environmental lobby group, Our Seas, Our Future, gave the petition to Green Party waste spokesperson Denise Roche to take to Parliament this afternoon.
Group spokesperson Rebecca Bird said the aim of the petition was to get the Government to start legislative processes to end the use of single-use plastic bags.
Ms Bird said the bags were an incredible problem for the environment given they were not biodegradable, they clogged up landfills, they were ingested by animals, and often ended up in the ocean.
