A Ministry of Fisheries says it has received about 1,600 calls to its poacher hotline since its launch last December.

The Ministry's deputy chief executive of field operations, Andrew Coleman, says calls from the public to the hotline have led to recent court action in Taranaki and Kaitaia.

The ministry says the number of calls is 15% higher than those received the previous year.
