Compensation call following Samoa brawl

Samoans are calling for peace and compensation for damage caused by a violent youth brawl on Savaii over the weekend.

The fighting broke out between youths of two villages, Salelavalu and Salelologa, which caused damage to property, vehicles and a market as well as roadblocks that made many locals feel unsafe.

There are concerns the violence, captured on video and posted on social media, could affect tourism.

"People are just condemning what they saw on the video, and especially what they did, like blocking the road and church ministers from the two villages trying to calm things down," said RNZ Pacific's Samoa correspondent, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia.

"And you can hear in the background people throwing rocks, people swearing and gunshots and so it is not really painting a good picture of Samoa."

Two men in custody are facing charges of causing grievous bodily harm.
