Turkey latest to recognise Libyan rebels

21:01 pm on 4 July 2011

Turkey has become the latest country to recognise the rebel Transitional National Council as the true representatives of the Libyan people.

Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu has met with the council's leader Mustafa Abdul Jalil in the eastern city of Benghazi where he said it was time for Muammar Gaddafi to go.

Turkey has also pledged $US200 million in aid for the Libyan rebels in addition to $US100 million announced in June, the BBC reports.

Colonel Gaddafi is unlikely to heed Turkey's call for him to step aside as leader and has paid no attention to similar invitations in the past.

A reported offer by the rebels to allow him to remain in Libya if he relinquishes power also appears to have fallen on deaf ears.

France, Italy and Qatar have also recognised the Transitional National Council.
